What job did you do previously? What led you to the commercial real estate industry?
“I was at GRAR prior to coming to NAI, which is the Grand Rapids Association of Realtors. It is the residential association for real estate, and I handled their membership. I was there for about 10 years. When I heard about the job opening at NAI, I remember thinking, real estate is real estate. What could be so hard? Although membership has very little to do with real estate, as I soon learned. I have been here over 5 years now.”
How did you decide to work as a Brokerage Assistant?
“I have worked in an office my entire life. I started out many years ago as to what was called a “secretary”, so I’ve always been in this type of role. I knew I would be comfortable taking this position as an assistant. I was hired to replace an assistant going on maternity leave and then I was to go into a new position as a “floater” when she returned. However, she did not come back, and I stayed on as the permanent assistant to Stan, Jason, and Mary Anne.”
What do you like most about working with NAI?
“I like the job itself and I am very fond of Mary Anne, Jason, and Paul (as I was of Stan). There are good people here too. I have learned that who you assist plays as strong of a role in your success as to what you bring to the table. If there is no mutual respect, then it won’t work. I appreciate coming to work trusting I will receive this as well as my giving respect to those around me. Although I have been faced with different challenges here at NAI, I am happy that NAI stands behind me in those challenges with patience and grace. We work but we also have fun. The fact that I can honestly say I look forward to coming to work, well that pretty much says it all.”
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
“My most enjoyable thing is being with my family. More particularly, I have a seven-year-old granddaughter, Zoe, who I love hanging out with. She is the ONLY person that I would spend time with over watching the Buckeyes on a Saturday afternoon! I love to travel and do weekend trips in Michigan. I like to cook and watch all the cooking shows and have often said I should have gone to culinary school.”
My favorite part of real estate is…
“Being part of a team. I feel my role more accurately is that of an administrative position rather than one of real estate. But I like it either way!”
