Meet Bill Tyson!
Why/how did you choose this career path?
In 1984, I started with a small commercial/industrial company. My father had been with that office and back then there were only a handful of commercial real estate companies. It was something I grew up with, my father had been in commercial real estate for years. As a kid, he’d take me out on weekends to look at different properties. I was interested in the business and always wanted to follow that path. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with my father for a few years before he retired.
What is some advice you would give to someone starting out in CRE?
Patience, persistence, and learning from different people. When I first got in the business one of my colleagues at that time told me to learn from different people but don’t try to copy any one person.
Find a mentor who can help guide you. Patience and integrity are important keys in this business. Stay connected and do what you say you’re going to do. The customer always comes first.
Where do you see CRE in 5-10 years?
I specialize in the retail sector and think there will still be some challenges ahead but in the long run, I think it’s going to continue to be strong. The internet has certainly had an impact on retail, but people still love to shop in brick and mortar stores.
What do you enjoy most about working for NAI?
I love the fact that I’m building relationships. Both colleagues and customers. I’ve been in the business for 35 years and I have a lot of customers that I’ve worked with for 20-25 years. I get to watch and help them grow; a lot of those people I’d call friends now. Working with sellers, buyers, landlords, or tenants, it’s a great feeling helping people solve problems. NAI has provided access to the industry’s most current and proven technologies and delivers the best possible service to each and every client.
Favorite thing to do in GR?
My wife and I love to go on hikes. We have two dogs and we love to get outdoors and go hiking, biking, boating, etc. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle and off-roading with my son whenever we get the chance.
How do you keep yourself from getting burnt out?
Getting burnt out is easy to do. In situations like that, remember that each day is a new day. You could have a terrible day or terrible week and then Monday could bring new opportunities. It’s important to try to stay positive.
Favorite book that has impacted your success?
Different books by Patrick Lencioni and “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson. A fable about dealing with change in the workplace and your personal life.
